PRINCIPAL ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

Coahuila benefits from a booming manufacturing industry, the state's main economic activity, which in turn generates favorable conditions for other sectors to develop successfully, such as commerce, services and construction. The strategic sectors of the state of Coahuila are: automotive, metal-mechanic, electronics, and mining.

1. AUTOMOTIVE

Coahuila is the host of important vehicle manufacturers, such as General Motors, Daimler Trucks and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. In its Saltillo plant, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles produces and assembles the engine of the Ram 1500, which represented its second largest investment in the world.

2. METAL MECHANICAL INDUSTRY

Over 29,000 railroad cars were manufactured in 2019 in Coahuila, and the metal-mechanic sector, to which the manufacturers of these vehicles belong, employs 22,800 people.

3. ELECTRONIC INDUSTRY

Companies such as Mabe, Oster, General Electric, Whirpool, Lennox International, Nortek Global HVAC, among others, comprise the household appliance sector based in the state.

4. MINING

Nationwide ranking in the production of metals and minerals Coahuila has 95% of Mexico's total coal reserves. It is also the largest producer of refined silver in the world; in 2019 it achieved a production of 64.9 million ounces of this mineral. It is also the largest producer of sulfates in the Western Hemisphere.

5. AEROSPACE INDUSTRY

Several companies in the aerospace sector have bet on Coahuila, which offers a wide range of products and services, covering the areas of engineering, parts processing, security systems, and heat treatment of metals.

6. AGROINDUSTRY

The land in Coahuila is productive. An example of this is the establishment of world-class food and beverage companies such as Constellation Brands and Lala.

7. RENEWABLE ENERGIES

Coahuila is one of the few states in Mexico that produces solar and wind energy on a large scale. It houses, for example, the largest solar energy plant in the Americas and one of the most extensive in the world. A total of 828 MW and 2,000 GWh are produced from these energy alternatives, enough to power up to 2 million homes.

8. STEEL INDUSTRY

Altos Hornos de Mexico (AHMSA) is the largest steel plant in Mexico, based in Monclova Coahuila, 250 kilometers from the United States border.

AHMSA is a national leader in the production and commercialization of flat steel products including hot rolled coil used for machinery parts, wide plate, cold rolled coil, tinplate and tin-free steel, railroad tanks and bridge constructions, and structural shapes. It also produces non-flat steel products like heavy shapes. The company benefits from a fully integrated supply chain, with its own coal and iron mines supplying raw materials to the steel plant.

WORKFORCE

Coahuila ranks first in formal employment in Mexico and second in productivity in the manufacturing industry.
In the state, public education is known for being flexible enough to adapt to labor needs. It has 186 institutions of higher education.
In 2020 there were 18,505 graduates from higher education in general; 40% are focused on industrial manufacturing.
