The different governments of Guanajuato have been led by the same political party for more than 29 years in a row, generating political stability and attracting more than 25,000 billion dollars of FDI from 2000 to date. In 30 years, the state's economy transformed from traditional agricultural to industrial, going from $300 million to $25 billion in export value.

The government of the State of Guanajuato has made great efforts to create the ideal conditions for the installation of world-class companies and has managed to attract companies such as GM, Honda, Mazda, AAM, Bosch, Toyota, Continental, and GKN, among others. Thanks to the implementation of a program of scholarships, incentives, and support services to companies, the State of Guanajuato has become a strategic partner in more than 500 investment projects landed in the last 20 years and Guanajuato has become the 6th economy in the country.

The main driver of the local economy is manufacturing, with the sector accounting for more than 38% of its economic output, according to the National Statistics and Geography Institute. In addition to being Guanajuato’s most important economic sector, the manufacturing industry is also one of the state’s most dynamic. Over the decade leading up to 2016, industry and manufacturing expanded at an average annual rate of 4.8%. Furthermore, the expansion of manufacturing has brought numerous benefits. For example, the transport, real estate and services sectors have all grown substantially as a result of the increased investment in industry.

Guanajuato state is the 6th exporting state in the country and now stands outs as the largest exporting state not located on the U.S. border.

The footwear and leather goods industry in Guanajuato is one of the most established and valuable industries. With over 400 years of experience, it represents a great business opportunity thanks to key factors such as its workforce, location, materials, agreements and certifications; all of which make it possible to meet the demand and quality requirements of global markets. Every year, more than 260 million pairs are manufactured, of which a large percentage goes overseas, consolidating the Mexican footwear industry. Most of the footwear is made in Leon, Guanajuato, one of the largest hubs of the leather and footwear industry.

According to the INA (Automotive Spare parts National Industry) Guanajuato produces 10.2 % of all the spare parts national production, including motors and transmission. The Bajio region represents 31.2% of the spare parts national production. The automotive industry in Guanajuato is consolidated by a strong and active automotive cluster composed by around 3,600 suppliers. 400 companies are Tier 1 and 2; 3,200 are small to midsize indirect manufacturers (spare parts, machinery, screws, maintenance, packing and cleaning chemicals among other products) and other are services suppliers (transport, security, canteen, cleaning, logistics, civil works...). The cluster´s purpose is also to develop a network of local supply to strengthen the supplier base and generate the best competitive conditions for new automotive companies considering Guanajuato as a potential new manufacturing site.

Agriculture is another important economic sector for the state. In total, the state produces crops worth more than MXN40bn ($2.2bn) per annum. Traditionally, Guanajuato’s main agricultural outputs have been strawberries, grains and beef, but over the last two decades the state government has worked to help local farmers shift towards higher value-added crops. As a result of diversification efforts, Guanajuato is now Mexico’s top producer of broccoli, cauliflower, anise, barley and artichokes.

Guanajuato has a territorial surface of 30,607 km2, representing 1.56% of the country's surface. It is the sixth federal entity with the largest population, with 6.11 million inhabitants, which are distributed in 46 municipalities; Guanajuato is its capital.

This state is considered the country's sixth-largest economy, bordering San Luis Potosi to the north, Jalisco to the west, Michoacan to the south, and the Queretaro region to the east.

Guanajuato is located 339 kilometers from Mexico City, the country's capital. Additionally, being part of the Bajio region, it is located 129 kilometers from Queretaro and 196 from Aguascalientes. It is also 702 kilometers away from Monterrey.

The manufacturing industry is the one that generates the most jobs in Guanajuato, with 692,738 jobs.

The 43% of the surface of the state of Guanajuato is characterized by a dry and semi-dry climate, located mainly in the northern region; 33% of the surface, towards the southwest and east, has a warm sub-humid climate, and the remaining 24% has a temperate sub-humid climate.

The average annual temperature is 18°C, while the highest average temperature is around 30°C, which appears in May and June, and the lowest is around 5.2°C in January.

The rains occur in the summer, mainly from June to September. The state's average annual rainfall is approximately 650 mm.

According to the forms of the terrain, the surface of the state of Guanajuato can be divided into two zones: the north-central and northeastern portion with plateau-shaped mountains and mountain ranges such as El Azafrán, made up of sedimentary rocks, separated by plains where the towns of Santa Bárbara, San Felipe, and San Luis de la Paz are located.

To the southeast of San José Iturbide, the maximum heights are greater than 3,000 meters. The city of Guanajuato is located in a mountain range formed in the northern part by rocks of extrusive igneous or volcanic origin) and those that extend to the northwest by intrusive igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.

Likewise, the central-southern, western, and southeastern zone comprises the Los Agustinos, Culiacán, and Sierra de Pénjamo volcanoes separated by plains, hills, and valleys.
