GEOGRAPHIC DATA

Michoacán is one of the 32 states that comprise the Mexican Republic, and it represents 2.99% of the national territory. It has a total area of 58,585 Km2 and is divided into 113 municipalities with a total population of 4,725,081 inhabitants, with Morelia as its capital. The state borders to the north with Guanajuato and Querétaro, to the east with the State of Mexico and Guerrero, to the west with Jalisco and Colima, and to the south with the Pacific Ocean.

Michoacán is located 372 kilometers from the National Capital, Mexico City. It is also close to the Bajio industrial corridor, as it is located 245 kilometers from the capital of the state of Guanajuato and 253 kilometers from Querétaro.

Michoacán ranks 9th nationwide in population, with a total of 4,725,081. Of these, 51.9% are women and 48.1% are men. The average age of the population is 31 years old.

It is projected that in the year 2030 the state will have a total of 5,093,493 inhabitants.

In 54.5% of the state, located in the Pacific coastal plain and the Sierra Madre del Sur, the climate is warm sub-humid; 29% in the neo-volcanic axis is temperate sub-humid and in the lower and middle parts of the Balsas and Tepelcatepec depression, 15% of the territory is dry and semi-dry. 1% is temperate humid and 0.5%, the upper regions of the neovolcanic axis have a humid climate.

The average annual temperature is 20°C and the lowest temperatures are presented during the month of January, around 8°C. The maximum average temperature is 31°C and is presented in the months of April and May.

Rains occur during the summer from June to September. The average rainfall in the state is 850 mm per year.

Michoacan's warm and temperate sub-humid climate favors the cultivation of avocados, which makes this state the main producer at the national level.

The state surface is part of the provinces Sierra Madre del Sur and Eje Neovolcanico.

There is a predominance of mountains from the beginning of the coastal area located in the southwest towards the northeast, with elevations such as El cerro de la Bufa, with 2,600 meters above sea level and El cerro la Magueyera, with 2,120 meters above sea level, made up of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks, interrupted by a valley where Apatzingan de la Constitucion is located, and which has some low areas represented by hills and valleys. In one of them the Infiernillo dam was built.

Moving towards the northeast there are mountain ranges, hills and volcanic mountains with small plains and valleys. In this area the elevations reach 3,840 meters above sea level as the Cerro Pico de Tancitaro or Volcan Paricutin with 2,800 meters above sea level.

There are 15 types of soil: : androsols, arenosols, calcisols, cambisols, durisols, fluvisols, histosols, kastanozems, leptosols, luvisols, phaeozems, lanosols, regosols, umbrisols, vertisols.
