GDP OF STATE

In 2018 Nuevo León registered an economic growth of 4.2%, with the national average being 2%. This growth was mainly driven by the manufacturing and services sectors.

The manufacturing productivity in Nuevo León grew by 6.7%.

In Nuevo León, 55,132 new Jobs were registered in 2018, which is equivalent to 8.3% of those registered at the national level.

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT

Nuevo León is a driving force in Mexico manufacturing and industry. In 2019, Nuevo León attracted $3.12 billion USD dollars in Foreign Direct Investment. For over 20 years, it has led the country in FDI, hosting more than 4,000 foreign companies and ranking number one on the World Bank’s ease of doing business index. This is due to many factors, including its high quality of life, world-class industrial infrastructure, unique cluster ecosystem, leading universities in the area, and commitment to technology and innovation.

Between 2015 and 2019, Nuevo León has directly supported more than 326 foreign direct investment projects that have decided to establish their operations in the State. These project are mainly from: USA (199), South Korea (55), Japan (23), Germany (21), China (16) and Spain (12). The main industries of these projects are the automotive, home appliances, IT&Software, energy, logistics, food & beverages, furniture, and aerospace.

Given all of its qualities, Nuevo León is an excellent place to invest in a wide range of industries from manufacturing services to technology, or for relocating nearshore or offshore manufacturing in Mexico.

More than 4,000 foreign companies are located in the state, mostly from the automotive, home appliances, food, and aerospace sectors. Some of the companies are KIA, Denso, Polaris, Panasonic, Magna, Daimler, Iberdrola, Honeywell, Whirlpool, LG, Nidec, Danfoss, Mars, Hershey's, Heineken, Lenovo, Softtek, Jabil, Kohler, Siemens, Schneider Electric, and LEGO.

MAIN ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES

1.– AUTOMOTIVE

Nuevo León's automotive industry comprises more than 200 companies, which have managed to position the sector as the state's leading employer. Likewise, approximately 20% of Mexico's auto parts production is generated in Nuevo León, making it the region's top exporter.
Companies such as KIA, International, Magna, Denso, Caterpillar, Polaris, Daimler, John Deere, and Brembo are established in the state.
It also has the Nuevo León Automotive Cluster. (Cluster Automotriz de Nuevo León, CLAUT), an association comprised of top-level manufacturers in the automotive industry, academic, and government institutions related to the industry.

2.- ELECTRONIC AND HOME APPLIANCES INDUSTRY

Nuevo León is one of the states with the most significant economic development in the country. The home appliance sector has positioned itself as one of the pillars of this growth. Companies such as Whirlpool, Carrier, LG, Philips, Panasonic, Trane Technologies, among many others, are installed here.

• 41% of the national production of home appliances is made in Nuevo León.

3.- INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

IT & Software industry in Nuevo León
• More than 400 IT companies comprise this industry's universe in Nuevo León.

• +14,000 Jobs created by the IT sector.

Some of the leading companies settled in the state are Softtek, Johnson Controls, GE, Sutherland, Lenovo, Axtel, IBM, Accenture, among others.

4.- MINING

Twenty-eight mines are located throughout the state, mainly dedicated to the extraction of barite; in Nuevo León, 97.91% of the national production is generated. Diatomite is another of the main minerals extracted in the state, where 44.84% of the national output is obtained.

5.- AEROSPACE INDUSTRY

The aerospace industry in Nuevo León has shown a vital dynamism during the last years. The aerospace industry in the region comprises 20 Tier 1 and Tier 2 companies, six research and development centers, two state government agencies, and two international airports. Additionally, Nuevo León has the second-largest aircraft fleet in the country.

This industry generates more than 3,500 direct jobs in the state and registers more than 800 million dollars in sales.

6.- MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY

The production of transportation equipment is the primary manufacturing sub-sector in Nuevo León; 53% of what is manufactured in the state comes from this niche. In total, the manufacturing industry is made up of 648 companies, which generate more than 588,000 jobs.

The leading companies in this sector are KIA, Daimler, Caterpillar, Navistar, and John Deere.

EDUCATION
There are more than 100 universities in Nuevo León, and each year more than 26,600 professionals graduate. It has the largest engineering school in Mexico and the best-ranked business school in Latin America. Among the prominent universities are the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo León (State University of Nuevo León), Instituto Tecnologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education), Universidad de Monterrey (University of Monterrey), and Universidad Regiomontana (Regiomontana University).

High school and higher education are characterized by its flexibility to adapt to the state's labor needs.
This flexibility has allowed the state to have the most productive labor force in Mexico and a readily available workforce. Each year, more than 8,500 engineers graduate in Nuevo León.

More than 152 Higher Education Institutions are in Nuevo León, and more than 8,500 engineering students graduate every year. Nuevo León has a rapid population growth. The most recent figure of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicates that from 2010 to 2015, more than 97,000 migrants arrived in Nuevo León, which is 50% more than the 65,000 that came from 2005 to 2010.
